Born 1949 in Kaufbeuren in the Allgäu, High School diploma ("Abitur") 1969 at the Marktoberdorf  High School, followed by university studies in political science and sociology, later anglistics and history in Munich and Regensburg; 1976 State Examination; internship in Regensburg and Kaufbeuren; 1979 teacher at the "Paul-Klee-Gymnasium" in Gersthofen.

From 1984 to 1990 he worked as Academic Counsellor at the "Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) München" in the Department of the Didactics of History, Doctorate in History on the topic “The Catholic Church and Occupying Power in Bavaria” ("Katholische Kirche und Besatzungsmacht in Bayern"). In 1990 he returned to high school teaching in Gersthofen with continued teaching activities at the Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) and for an American university. Honored with the Josef Felder Prize of the Bavarian SPD, the Bebo Wager Prize and the Willi Ohlendorf Prize.

Awarded the "Bundesverdienstkreuz" (Federal Cross of Merit) in 2014 for his commitment to Italian and Ukrainian forced laborers. Honorary citizen of the "Commune Casina" (Reggio Emilia and Galluccio (Caserta)) and of "Chamenez-Podolsk" (Ukraine).
 
Participation in the film "8744" by Alessandro di Gregorio about the Italian military internees in Gersthofen and subsequent high school project, which won two first places at documentary film festivals in Italy.

From 2011 to 2016 Chairman of the Association "Gegen Vergessen-Für Demokratie" in Augsburg-Schwaben. Presently he is actively engaged in the Augsburg and Gersthofen “Stumbling Stones” ("Stolperstein Initiative") and the “Commemorative Culture” Committee ("Erinnerungskultur") in Augsburg. He is also active in historical research, e.g. on the Nazi murder of mentally and physically challenged patients in the Kaufbeuren asylum

 

He participated in the Filmproject  „Die Stille schreit®” by Josef Pröll in collaboration with Miriam Friedmann
